Sent to North and South American by the kingdom of Spain, Catholic missionaries were instructed to bring the Catholic faith to Native Americans. To achieve this goal, priests and friars lived frugally as they established small religious and colonial communities.
In the early days of furniture making the available materials were no where near those in existence today. For example there were not many nails to be found and any hardware was severely limited. This means those building furniture had to come up with their own construction ideas. It’s ironic that the appealing simplicity of this furniture actually came out of necessity. When you look at mission pieces it’s easy to imagine soldiers and priests newly settled in America using them in their basic earthen habitats.
