In my home office I have a glass-top desk
In my home office I have a glass-top desk, which I purchased from Plummer’s about eight years ago. The frame is black metal tubing. I like the glass surface because it is easy to clean and it makes the desk seem smaller and lighter, so it doesn’t give the impression of dominating or crowding the room the way a wooden or metal desk does.
I have three short drawer units that sit under the desk in the same position that built-in drawers would take. I think I got them at Target. They are on wheels, so I can pull them out for easy access if I need to.
They are black to match the desk’s framework. I also have an ordinary four-drawer file cabinet. It’s a dark tan color. I’ve had it for over 20 years, purchased at some office supply tore, and it is still in good condition. I use a magnet clip to attach my wall calendar to the side of the file cabinet.
I need a lot of shelving for books and various work materials. For that I use bookcases that I bought from IKEA. They have a dark brown wood veneer. I had to put them together myself, but it wasn’t very difficult. I like the fact that I can adjust the height of the shelves as my needs change.
Altogether I have about 15 feet (in width) of bookcases, the tall ones arranged around a corner piece, and the short ones on another wall that I face when I sit at my desk. The one incongruous piece is a rattan table that supports some equipment.
This was originally purchased many years ago as a table for the entryway in the house, but I replaced it with something nicer and moved it down here because I needed an extra surface. I like the glass desk a lot and would definitely get one like this again. The shelving is also good.
I could really use a better work table to replace the rattan one. Something a little bigger and sturdier would be best because I need steady support when I am using the paper cutter and the binder that are on that table now.
However, I wouldn’t be able to get a table too much bigger because of space limitations in this room. The rattan table has a couple of drawers, but they are very small, so I just keep printer cartridges in them. I could always use more drawer space.
I also wish I had a coat rack in here just because it would be handy to hang my jackets and purses there. I also like my desk chair a lot. It’s a fully-adjustable Leap chair in black fabric. These are quite expensive, but I saved some money by buying it on eBay and picking it up in person from the seller.
The arms, seat, and back can all be adjusted in many different ways. This has helped me a lot to be more comfortable when I’m working. I was having some arm and back pain, but that is mostly gone now. I would definitely choose this kind of chair again.
What I am missing in this office is pictures hanging on the wall. I’ve never been able to figure out what I would want to have where I look at it every day. So instead I have blank walls and a window.
