My living room is furnished around the fact that I have two little pug dogs

My living room, as well as my entire one-bedroom apartment, is furnished around the fact that I have two little pug dogs that shed their beige hair a lot!

In order to camophlage this, I have furnished my entire living room in the color beige! Color can be found in the pillows and the wall hangings. In order to read my morning newspaper in comfort, with one pug dog on either side of me, I purchased a large Bergere chair, with a matching ottoman, in beige leather which I found advertised in a newspaper by the well-known department store, Bloomingdale’s.

I had it shipped about 1500 miles. Alongside it there is a metal floor lamp and a small chest made of rattan that I use as a place to put a phone and the coffee cup.

My living room has two sections, each about ten feet long and ten feet wide. One section has the Bergere chair, lamp and chest, along with two beige “easy” chairs. Although the dogs are not allowed on either of these, they are upholstered in a beige cotton material.

There are two small bookcases finished in natural light wood tones, and a white dining table with four rattan chairs. Each chair has a white pillow seat which can be removed for laundering.

The other section is a combination office/den. The television is set on a natural wood cabinet with several compartments underneatht for storage. Also on this cabinet is a DVD/CD player and a fax/phone machine. Alongside this is a tall cabinet in the same wood that holds photograph albums, a CD player and music CD’s.

This cabinet also has storage space at the bottom. There is a corner desk in the same wood tone as the other cabinets and on which is a computer and printer. On it is also a lamp depicting a monkey riding an elephant, with a brown shade.

The other two walls hold an L-shaped couch which is actually two single daybeds, in the light wood tone to match the cabinets. These beds are covered in light tan leather and are lined with matching large pillows. In front of the leather pillows I have placed smaller, colorful pillows from India.

There is a white metal floor lamp that has three bulbs facing in three different directions. In front of the daybeds is a wood Parsons table. The bookcases, cabinets and Parsons table were inexpensive and bought unfinished from a local home supply store. I sanded and stained them.

The dining table is collapsible to a cocktail table if needed and was purchased from a store in New York City, Castro Convertible, which is famous for its folding furniture. I believe rooms should be furnished so as to flow into one another.

Thus, I have beige tile floors throughout, and all wood is finished in a natural finish. Furniture needs to be comfortable and functional and need not be expensive.

My advice to anyone furnishing a home or apartment is to buy inexpensive large pieces and spend the money on artwork and designer touches.
