My living room is in a Victorian Tenement flat typical of where I live in Scotland. These buildings were designed to house the workforce of the newly industrialized city and have a typical look to them featuring red sandstone, high ceilings, bay windows and good proportions.

Traditionally each room would have housed a whole family, including a fireplace where all the cooking would have been done and a bed recess where they would sleep.

My living room still features the bed recess, which I have used to build my kitchen, although the fireplace has been blocked up.

Essentially the room is square with a large window letting in lots of light, and the recess that has a fitted kitchen.

I didn’t want a typical kitchen and so it is very modern with sleek grey units, and a bright red Perspex splash back.

The living area needed to match that, and has a perfect shade of purple-grey on the walls which complements the red and grey of the kitchen but is a soft warm color. This color flows through and ties into the palette in the rest of the house, cappuccino and heather colored.

The red from the kitchen is reflected in a very smart designer rug which has wonderfully deep pile and covers most of the floor. The floor itself is the original stripped floorboards which have been sanded and varnished.

Seating arrangements include a window seat created with grey feather cushions in the window recess and an IKEA sofa – which actually is too small for our requirements, but has been custom dyed to match the color scheme.

I team this with soft lambs wool rugs and throws which make it the perfect place to snuggle up in front of a good film on a cold, windy afternoon.

The television sits on a childhood piece of furniture – a bedside cabinet that acts as the perfect height and shape to accommodate the television and the DVD player beneath it.

Tables are a collapsible table and chairs which are to one side of the room, and a coffee table in the form of a traditional schoolboy trunk – complete with my initials stenciled onto it.

Lighting in my living room is via a central ceiling light which is an oversized globe, a paper covered standard lamp and a series of spotlights in the kitchen supplemented by mood lighting which illuminates the kitchen cabinets.
