My living room is in a Victorian Tenement flat typical of where I live in Scotland. These buildings were designed to house the workforce of the newly industrialized city and have a typical look to them featuring red sandstone, high ceilings, bay windows and good proportions.
Traditionally each room would have housed a whole family, including a fireplace where all the cooking would have been done and a bed recess where they would sleep.
My living room still features the bed recess, which I have used to build my kitchen, although the fireplace has been blocked up.
Essentially the room is square with a large window letting in lots of light, and the recess that has a fitted kitchen.
I didn’t want a typical kitchen and so it is very modern with sleek grey units, and a bright red Perspex splash back.
The living area needed to match that, and has a perfect shade of purple-grey on the walls which complements the red and grey of the kitchen but is a soft warm color. This color flows through and ties into the palette in the rest of the house, cappuccino and heather colored. Read more »
