Rattan or cane furniture is very common in North Eastern India where it is a cottage industry.
Most homes will have cane furniture for tow reasons.
First because they are affordable compared to wood furniture.
Secondly, the houses being small, heavy wooden furniture will crowd the living space.
When we lived in a University campus in the North East of India, the housing we were given was furnished with cane furniture: sofas, matching chairs, center and side tables.
Every one had complaints about this ‘official furniture’ because they were badly made, with nails protruding dangerously all over it and they collapsed easily. Broken furniture being dumped outside homes was soon a common sight. Read more »
I have, for several years, been searching for the exact “lounge” furniture I’ve always dreamt of having, but have yet to find it.
I’ve finally decided that it’s not the pieces themselves, but their purpose & fit in my life. I have almost always had at least one cat, currently 4, and the lounge furniture seems to be used more for them for me or my guests!
I just recently moved into a new home with a completely separate sun room that needed just such furnishings. So, I realized along the way, that when I started looking, I was heavily factoring in my cats’ personalities & preferences.
The largest one, and oldest one, wants something like a pile of laundry…so soft, comfortable, plush cushions became a priority.
The only female, and “Pretty, Pretty Princess” of the group likes to be able to get to the highest points so she can watch over everyone, so I looked for high-backed pieces. Read more »
After finally completing our screened porch, we began the great and nearly endless search for the perfect patio lounge furniture.
Like Goldilocks, either everything we found was ‘too cold’ or ‘too hard’.
It was ‘too modern’ or ‘too old fashioned’ – nothing was right. Finally, after nearly 6 months of shopping we found it.
We found a set of cushioned teak lounges that fit the space on our perfectly.
They were incredibly comfortable – so much so that more often than not – our reading sessions turned into light, but blissful naps.
Now we spend our evenings and weekends looking out over my wives lovely garden.
A hummingbird feeder placed in front of our lounge chairs brings a few remarkable moments each day. Read more »
The type of rattan furniture we have is a long rectangle dining table with eight chairs.
The table has decorative flowers etch by hand on the sides and has a brown finish and sharp pointy edges.
It has a glass top. We had to replace once. The table is very heavy. The chairs are also decorative with flowers on the back seat and making kind of a rounded triangle tip in the middle and two pole like knobs on the end.
In the middle and the seat it’s like a rattan basket weave type of thing.
My parents had this specifically made in the Philippines a long time ago and it last for over 30 years now. Read more »
Am going to write about my living room furniture. My living room is of good size in length and width.
I don’t know the exact dimensions. I chose furniture for my living room in such a way that it looks brighter and also warmer.
My living room is tiled with grey marble and the sofa set which are of 8 seats, i.e: 2 single seatс, 1 double seat and 1 triple seat.
A small table is kept in the middle of the sofa sets. The sofa set wood is of teak and the cushion is of sponge of good quality.
The color of the sofa set is brown in color which suits to the tiling. I chose the furniture by price and looking at the quality of wood and sponge used for making sofa set.
The wood used for living room furniture is used for almost all the other room furnitures. In the living room, there is a big TV stand also made of teak. In it is kept the TV, DVD players, satellite receiver, CD’s, small decorations etc. Read more »
In my house, I have an atrium and a sunroom. I like to have a small patio set in the atrium, and a larger table and chair set in the sunroom.
The patio set consists of a small round table (approximately 4′ in diameter) made of a dark walnut wood, as well as two matching chairs.
The set in the sunroom consists of a teak rectangular table (approximately 6′x8′) surrounded by six matching chairs. Both sets are similar to what can be found at IKEA, but higher quality.
These have been durable throughout years and years of abuse from rain, sun, and children. These sets are constantly getting compliments, as they are fitting for the Californian coastal living vibe that is emulated from my interior decorations.
To make my decorations seasonal, I tend to choose colors that agree with the seasons.
For example, in the springtime, I put out flowers that are bright and colorful. During the summer, I put out bright whites to bring a relaxed, summer feel. For autumn, I accent with natural golds, reds, and oranges. Read more »
Does Bigger Mean Better? I still have the same bedroom set that was purchased almost 20 years ago when we moved to a new home.
My husband and I looked at many bedroom sets and we finally settled on a beautiful cherry wood bedroom set.
It consisted of a queen sized bed with a finely detailed head board, a highboy and a six foot long, ten drawer bureau with a huge mirror to compliment it.
Now, my husband had always loved oversize furniture and this certainly was the case. Arrangements were made for the furniture movers to come several days later and I didn’t envy their job because it was going up on the second floor.
The stairs leading up there were pretty steep and the hallway was quite narrow, so when you got to the top it was going to be quite a chore to turn the bureau and get it into the bedroom, but they did it easier than I thought was going to be possible.
However, we got hit with a problem I never thought of. They went to bring the box spring up the stairs and it just wasn’t going to go. You see, at the base of the stairs the ceiling came down. It wasn’t too much taller than I was. Read more »
To review about my bedroom furniture, its of good length and width as I don’t know the exact dimensions.
A double coated bed is placed in the bedroom and near to the bed is kept a small table for keeping small alarm clock, table lamps etc.
Such that in case of urgency at night, need not run from the bed in search of switching on the light.
Here also plenty of cupboards are made and attached to the wall. Mirrors are also attatched to the cupboard.
The double coated bed is also made of teak and also the cupboards are built by using it. The tiling used inside the bedroom is of marble which is almost grey in color.
In the bedroom make sure that not more than one window is necessary. Bedroom means its private room, so not much access should be there.
Please make sure that this window is located such that sunlight as well as fresh air enters through it. A bathroom can be attached to the bedroom that depends upon the wish of the owner. Read more »
To tell about my dining room furniture, an eight seated dining table is kept at the centre of the room such that while serving food, the one who serves food can have access to all the members around the table.
The dining table is made of teak and also the chairs. The chairs are provided cushions made of good quality sponge so that the guests are seated properly and the feel pleasant.
The dining room has cupboards attached to the walls as well as a single cupboard. In these cupboards the plates, glasses, cups, saucers etc are placed neatly.
These cupboards are also made of teak. On the dining table a jug of water will be kept daily such that in case of emergencies, there is no need to go under a tap to get water or even if to get rid of the thirst, you can have it.
The visitors coming to home can also have a glass of water as glasses are also kept along with jug. Read more »
My dining room set is a plain, unfinished pine (or at least, pine look alike) table and 4 chairs from IKEA.
They were chosen because of the low price of $40 for the table and $20 for the chairs except for the fact that I got 2 of the chairs from the as is section for a reduced price).
I like them because I can refurnish them, paint them or varnish them to change the look or simply cover with a table cloth to add some color.
If I was working on the same budget I would choose the same dining set again- the keep me and my food off the floor and they didn’t cost and arm and a leg.
If I was working with a higher budget I might choose something a bit nicer looking, something that will last for a long time and possibly be able to be resold or passed down to future generations to keep things out of the landfill. Read more »
